Laos Tech Digest #2641

Week of October 5, 2026 – October 11, 2026

Laos Tech Digest

The week in brief

A quiet week for Lao technology: the two developments we kept both come from Vietnam’s official visit to Laos on 8–9 October. Vietnam’s prime minister visited Unitel and set out a direction for the Vietnamese group that owns it, and Vietnam handed over a population-management and citizen-identification system to Laos. No Lao operator or internet provider announced a new product, price or coverage change in this window, and we found no new reporting on the items covered in #2640 (Kaspersky–Best Telecom, Sber QR payments).

What happened: On 9 October, during an official visit to Laos, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung visited and worked with Unitel, the Lao mobile operator run as a joint venture by Vietnam’s state-owned Viettel. Several Vietnamese outlets carried the same remarks.

Why it matters

Unitel’s direction is being set from Hanoi

Unitel is the Lao mobile operator that the Vietnamese reports describe as leading the country’s telecoms and digital technology, and it is a joint venture of Viettel, which is owned by the Vietnamese state. The direction reported this week was given in Vientiane by a foreign head of government whose state owns one side of that venture. What it does not do is change anything a Lao customer can buy: no product, price, coverage or launch date was announced, so this is a strategic orientation rather than a service change. For the market Unitel competes in, our 2026 comparison of internet providers in Laos sets out the main operators.
